Interview with Skinny Puppy

SKINNY PUPPY The Blank Generation (by Brad Kruger)
Crouched forward on his seat, Skinny Puppy's Dwayne Goettel tosses, cradles
and fondles an eyeball the size of a fist, with both hands...not a real one, of
course. It's a promotional gimmick for Skinny Puppy's latest release, "Cleanse,
Fold And Manipulate". Noticeably nervous, he admits that he doesn't like
interviews much, he doesn't like being under the microscope.
"I mean, the English language seems so linear," Goettel says, "I don't
know, it's so limiting. That's why I wanted to get into music in the first
place. You extend yourself through a video, a record or through a live
performance, and then, when the circle goes all the way around...in the end,
you're back at the table in front of a person trying to express yourself
again." He pauses, "I mean, this is what I was trying to get away from in the
first place!"
An average Skinny Puppy live show is everything-but-average. More like
ALice Cooper caught in the frenzies of an adrenalin flush...Or Ozzy Osbourne
mugged and raped by a gang of inspirational muses. Digitally altered voices,
heavy stage smoke, big metal barrels for drums, a truckload of synthesizers,
and on-stage spontaneity --- simutaneously interjected with video and radio
clips --- Skinny Puppy uses them all.
"We've become attached," Goettel says. "Our nervous system maight as well
be attached to the airwaves, through radio, through your walkman, your TV.
They're a part of us. I have 31 channels at home, and we've got the TV and the
stereo all hooked up together. I mean, put on a record and change the channels
on the TV and within five minutes you're likely to find the music completely
syncged up with what's going on on the box. I think that it's there for our use
and it's up to us to control the media. We're turning it around and we're using
it as a part of our expression, part of our art."
