View Full Version : Playing .avi files...

This is going to sound like a very dumb question, but bare with me.

I'm currently using Flip4Mac to play .wmv/.wma and up until recently it would play .avi files. But now when I try it comes up with a message saying "Quicktime is missing certain components needed to play this type of file" I tried uninstalling Flip4Mac, secure deleting the program files. And then redownloading/installing it. But I still get the error message.

I've ticked the box saying "Play .avi files" So it's not that, and just to make sure the .avi files weren't corrupted I tried them in VLC and they worked no problem.

I've run this against Google, but found nothing of use. Can anyone think of any reason why this is happening? It's no big deal to use VLC to use the .avi files, but I'd prefer just to use one app for everything.

Can anyone offer any insight as to why this is happening?

Thanks in advance.

S'all I use.

The thing with AVI is it's just a media container. You could be missing the codecs for the audio/video in the AVI.

You might want to install the Divx codec (www.divx.com) which will allow you to view Divx-encoded files with .avi extensions. But this doesn't handle everything out there, such as Xvid.

As nuclearrabbit said, get VLC. It's seriously the best. And forget FrontRow, since VLC now has support for the Apple remote.

Peace.

Man, I lost my stinking remote.
I have no idea where it is.
So...
I stole my sister's.

That was irrelevant; I'm sorry.
