hello
I have a(n) 12" iBook G3 900mhz
recently, I noticed the 45W power brick which came with the computer was getting REALLY hot
now it doesn't work at all....the glowing ring just continually changes from amber to green, and the display keeps changing from charging to battery
I inspected the pin and barrel ring....all are fine and not broken or bent
I guess I was wondering if Apple could replace it for free....with it overheating and all I dont want a potential fire hazard if it melted. If not, then is there any way I could open it up and fix it? any insight is appreciated.
........In the mean time I have it hooked up to a generic branded 65W charger that seems to be doing the trick, but is much bulkier to carry around:(.
Apple stopped selling G3 laptops a long time ago. I doubt they will replace it for free; I can almost guarantee that. They probably don't even sell it anymore at the apple store.
Your best bet is to search eBay or stick with the replacement you have now however heavy/bulky it is.
I wouldn't open it up unless u know exactly what you are doing.
Peace.

Dude I used to have that model. Before it died due to logic board issues. See my thread on calling up apple - the power adapter I got for my powerbook is the exact same one you need. Be sure to tell them how careful you have been with it, and ask to speak to a supervisor, and don't even think about buying one when they ask you to, just say this thing is a fire hazard and I'm endangering my family or somesuch. Good luck dude.
BTW I'm sure that the later G3 ibooks all came with 65W power adapters - wtf? 45W isn't enough to run a lappy and charge the battery at the same time.
I guess. You are going to really have to bitch and whine like a little girl to get them to replace that old G3 power adapter. I can see them going for a G4 model power adapter, but a G3? I guess if has been done before, go for it. Good luck with all of that :)
Peace.

No, you're thinking of the old yoyo adapter that was on G3 powerbooks and clamshell (coloury) iBooks. The 900mhz iBook takes the white block adapter with the smaller plug - same as the G4 powerbooks and G4 ibooks.

Ah, I see. I thought they were different, sorry.
Peace.

Oooh! Mine did the exact same thing...and they wouldn't replace it, so I did the DIY gpu reflow with a heat gun and got it back to working again, even better than before......and no, the power brick was a 45W on the 12" and 14" Ibooks (G3 and G4) and the 12" Powerbook G4 and then was 65W on the 15" and 17" Powerbook G4s. The power adapter died before I did the reflow, so I'm sure that wasn't the issue. Oh well, I'll give it a try......bitchin does sometimes work:p
