You know, the fact that you have to put your hands on it for it to "work" should send off a signal that it's bullshit right off. Ghosts supposedly move shit on their own all the time. Why can't they move a marker thing across a board?

^Valid question, the answer to which is one reason why many of us strongly advise against using Ouija.
That is, when using one, you open yourself up to a sort of possession--entity attachment, to use the proper term. That is, whatever entity which might be in the neighborhood works through you.
And what's worse, quite a few kids have admitted to doing so when under the influence of drugs, which makes one all the more vulnerable to entity attachment--lowers your vibrational rate and all.

So I take it you don't believe in the whole ideomotor effect explanation of the ouija board?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ideomotor_effect
I guess it would be very difficult to say all instances with a ouija board can be attributed to spirits communicating, or they're all attributed to people moving it subconsciously, or even on purpose. But I'd have to guess that most do not actually contact any spirits.
edit: Why do you have to open yourself up? If what I said is true, that ghosts can communicate in ways without using a live human body, then why isn't there a board game that features that?
"Instructions: Place marker on center of board. Ask question. Wait."

Look. I'm not even going to ask the obvious, most common question (How does it work?). I'm going to ask something more basic.
WHY?
Let's say that ghosts or whatever can move you (I'll let someone else have fun with that part). Why do they choose to do so? Just to have fun? Then why don't they always just mess around with you?
Please, enlighten me.

Man, you'd sure think so - but it's never worked for me. Granted, I haven't tried it in at least a decade and a half ... but I'd sure be open to experimenting with it.

I'm guessing this version would be sub-par?

I've been listening to Coast to Coast AM a little recently, and I guess the one host, George Noory, has always thought ouija boards are crap, while I think the other guy, Art Bell, advises against messing with them. George is supposed to do a ouija board experiment later this month...July 25th I believe. I don't know if it will be on the air itself, or just his "findings."

Ignorant, irresponsible, and unethical.
But when has American business been noted for ethics?
You know what would be cool? If someone could answer my questions.
Why would it matter if you're "willing"? How do you define "willing" ?

I think it's fairly obvious that Pooh Bear and his arsehole friends are playing a sick practical joke on Mr Grey Ape. They've just 'told' him he's going to be shot by Kenyan poachers and his hands are going to be turned into ashtrays for a rich western business man.
Why else do you think they call him Pooh Bear? It's because he's a little shit, that's why.

Not at all. In general, you are most vulnerable to entity attachment when you are angry, fearful, or under the influence of drugs--all of which kind of lower your vibrational rate, to lapse in New Age-speak.

What vibrational rate are you talking about? Doesn't your brain give off higher frequency electromagnetic waves when you are angry or scared?

But when has American business been noted for ethics?
Toshiba sold nuclear submarine "quiet propellers" to the Russians just after the war, so they could beat our Sosus submarine detection system. Hard to believe, but totally true. Congress was smashing Toshiba devices with a sledge hammer on public TV after that happened, to voice their "apparent disapproval", but look where Toshiba is today! They're doing just fine!

Can ouija boards be used solo? Spare me any masturbation jokes.
If the answer is yes, I'll make a video of the results of using one. I can't promise anything will actually happen mind you. And irrespective of the answer, I wouldn't recommend anyone else try this.

There's an interesting short-article in Wikipedia on what is referred to as the Ideomotor Effect.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ideomotor_effect
It is basically a scientific answer (not THE answer of) to what are typically considered supernatural devices... the ouija board, automatic writing, etc. Says that ultimately the answers are stemming from your unconcious.
If you're not ready to get in touch with your unconcious then there are potentially bad effects to this, particularly if your questions end up touching repressed issues.
Alternatively, if you have a mind that is closed to the supernatural other than surface actions like experimentation, you could find that your close-mindedness is based on a fear of the unknown and really fuck yourself up if something unexpected comes out.
Or, if you're a skeptic such as myself, one who has immersed himself in general reading about the paranormal and supernatural... I might find myself with a self-induced psychosis when I become convinced that the ouija is real... whether it is or not. Why would that happen? Because I know the warnings of interaction with the ouija, know the risks of the doors it supposedly opens, and may have forgotten a critical step necessary (or simply ignored it) to protecting myself from that which is on the other side. Whether it's there or not, I become convinced that I have unleashed something and turn into a victim of my own paranoia.
So yeah, it seems to me that there are some risks to doing something like this, and it might be a good idea to do a little introspection and decided exactly what kind of preparations you should make beforehand. After all, this experiment is dependent upon the interpretation of the board-user... whatever video you provide is going to be meaningless without the context you give us. Ultimately unless something wildly visible happens, the parameters of the experiment are ... you.
I'm being a bit long-winded here, so I hope that the point I'm making isn't lost in the message.

*breaks out metal detector and shovel*
Just kidding... you've outlined the situation very well. I'm aware of the ideomotor effect and have mentioned it in more ouija threads than I care to remember. The potential pyschological consequences are exactly why I recommended against people attempting it themselves.
I wasn't intending on this experiment 'proving' anything, I am prepared to do it purely out of personal curiosity. Some would say my mind is as tightly closed as Jew's sphincter. The video was therefore intended for those interested in the consequences of a sole skeptic attempting to use ouija, be them dramatic or not.

Fair enough. Do a written transcript as well? Until I remedy the situation, I gots no video option.

Just don't get annoyed if the transcript amounts to "2hrs later... nothing happened."
This may take a few days to come to fruition, apart from making a board I've got a lot of other shit going on up to and including Friday. I'd like to do a little more research on certain aspects as well. I won't forget though, trust me!

That's the problem with getting The Answer to your question... it's not a very useful answer, and depends on which Ouija Authority's advice you decide to take on the subject. I've ready stuff about turning the board upside down, about how turning the board upside down is useless, about using salt, about how using salt is silly, about reversing the board, and how that's pointless- well... you see where I'm going with that.
You can always consult Dr. Speckles, I'm sure his omniscience-level access to all supernatural knowledge should tell you whatever you need to know.

what's up spectral & slave?
uh, I've used a ouija board before, me & a friend. we were in his attic, supposedly there was weird shit going on in the house.. cat food getting thrown @ his door window (inside the house as in the door to his room). weird shit, they posted a video on the interwebz of a video camera that was mounted to the ceiling in the crib, & it showed an old ladies ghost or something standing still but anyway onto the good stuff!
we were up there right using the board asking nothing but intelligent questions, I researched before hand. then we took a break, the "entity" followed us downstairs.. we talked to his dad for a minute & he wrote a number on a piece of paper, neither me or my buddy seen what the number was. we went back upstairs to the attic & asked the board or whoever what the number was.. who woulda guessed it told us the number that his dad wrote on a piece of paper. the end. :)

man.. it was way too real for comfort, fucked with me for awhile afterwards, because they didn't leave.. we supposedly let one guy free because he just wanted someone to talk too or something like that. but the thing is.. he came back for his buddy, whom was his b/f. he wanted us to talk to him too. they died over that area where we were in the attic, a war forgot the name of it but yeah they died in battle.. later on I found out that the spirits in the ouija board or whoever we talked to, lie & are bad, fallen angels\demons, maybe tho, they just wanted to talk to someone because it's been awhile.. since they did you know.. talk to someone in some form or another but yeah fellas sorry for the long post/no paragraphs/bad punctuation and shit, feel free to ask about this experience I had.. I've yet to use another ouija board, & for the love of god don't ever ask a question you don't want to know the answer too.

I'm going to be using a "talking board" within the coming weeks. My mom ordered it and we plan on playing it with my little cousin. I was doing some research and decided it isn't a very good idea to let a little kid use it, but he'll probably be insistant. My mom sees it a fortune telling device [which we all know is totally wrong]. I tried explaining that it's either the ideomotor effect or a communication tool with other-worldly entities. She keeps saying we should try to "summon" certain spirits like famous people. I keep saying "How the hell do you know it's not some random entity just CLAIMING it's that person, there's no way to know!" I mean, thinking of "summoning" anything with a ouija board...just NO.
She's stuck in the same mentality she was asa kid when she sued to play with it. Her and her friends used to use it, and once did the 'light as a feather stiff as a board' thing successfully with a girl sitting on a chair. Anyway, I explained it to her like this; it's like you're communicating with someone on the internet, you have NO clue if they're telling the truth or totally lying...not to mention you could be communicating with something not human...or something very, very negative.
Here's what I'm going to do. I'm going to sweep the house we're using it at with an EMF meter I have first to ID any sources of stray EMFs. I'll get a base reading with everything set up like it will be when we'll be using the board, and then we'll start. As we use it I'll note any changed in the EMF reading and post the results in this thread or a seperate one.
Oh, and should I try to make it do something physical? I know it's not advised but as long as what we contact isn't really negative, I think it would be ok to try.
PS - I'm bringing salt.

Much like a vampire must be invited in by the house-holder before it can feed, the demons that walk the skin of this world are eagerly awaiting your voluntary solicitation. Be careful what you wish for; you just might get it.
It's bs. If you do it alone, it's not going to work. I've done it alone, with a ouija board that i cast the spell on with red wax like i read, and nothing happened. somebody died in the house i was in. but supposedly nobody is "supernaturally strong enough" to do it with just one person  so the odds are better for some asshole moving....I mean a ghost to posess one of you when six people have their goddamn hands on it.

Absolutely. Many people have great success using the Ouija by themselves."
