Me and my friends have always wanted to go abroad somewhere for a while together, and this summer looks to be the year we are doing it. We were best friends when we were younger, and are sort of re-uniting in Amsterdam.
None of us have ever been, but I know a good few people who have.
We want to be within walking distance of the Red light district obviously. Basically we just want to go over and party for a week, drinking at night and sampling the cafes finest in he day.
Has anyone here been before? What hotel did you stay in, was it any good, what cafes would you recommend, bars, any hidden away places to visit?
Thanks to anyone who helps, I'm doing my research on Amsterdam at the moment, but I would prefer to speak to some people that have actually been, rather than reading wiki page after wiki page.

Thanks for the advice. I found a map of Amsterdam with the locations of a good few cafes on it, and have added some others I wish to visit to it as well.
Why should I avoid the red light district when smoking? I understand that cannabis in Amsterdam is not exactly legal, but rather it is 'tolerated'. That they don't like people smoking it freely in the streets. I don't intend to smoke outside unless me and my friends are in a nice little secluded spot, or its late at night. I was just curious as to whether there is a specific reason I should avoid smoking in the red light district.

Sorry bout that, allow me to clarify. The red light district is a laugh and definitely worth going to, but the coffee shops there (or at least the ones I've been to) tend to be tourist traps or neon-lighted shit holes. Nothing to do with legality, it's just a question of where to enjoy a pleasant smoke.
Then again, when it comes to travelling I wouldn't take anyone's word as gospel, merely information to consider when making a decision. Everyone is different and has different experiences / a different take on where to go and what to do.

Cool, I went there last year in autumn, stayed at the Delta hotel right near the central station. You could literally cross the road and be in the red light district :-D. There were also cafes and the odd hookah bar all around.
That said, you do need to be careful of the shady black guys offering you drugs.
should be fun though.

Buy Tobacco= 16 years old
Buy/smoke green = 18 years old
I went in a coffee shop but they asked for my passport (I tried to blag it but I was only 16). So I would recommend if you are 18, taking your passport/driving license. If under 18 I would recommend investing in some phake ID.

The biggest plus is that is has our 3 most famous museums; Van Gogh Museum, Anne Frank Museum and the State Museum. Altho I don't find the Anne Frank museum interesting.
If you're going for culture it's good, but be wary of getting ripped off, when you don't speak dutch some people will try and take advantage of you.
The night life is arguable, it's certainly good, and I know people who consider it the best city for clubbing etc. Other people find it complete shit, going out there is expensive (because of the large amount of tourists).
And there are lots of other cities with a great nightlife, as long as you know where to go. And every dutch city has coffeeshops, altho I have to admit none as much as Amsterdam.

We are planning on going either for 4 days, or a week. For 4 days it will cost around £300pp minus what we spend in the country. We are all 18, so nothing over there will be a problem and accommodation can be easily set up. Some places require at least one person to be 19 or older seeing as 18 is still pretty young.
16 for beer.
18 for spirits.
18 for weed.
18 for smart drugs.
Class A's - Illegal regardless of age.

I also intend to visit Amsterdam this summer. Il be taking a visit to coffee shops by day (I don’t usually smoke weed.)
And by night attempting to find a rave or good club in which to partake in sampling the fine local pussy and drugs.
A few questions:
Is it hard to communicate being an English speaker? Should I attempt to learn a little Dutch?
Any recommended clubs and coffee shops? I would like to avoid the usual tourist traps.
Any recommendations on security around the city? How much money to carry, how much things will cost, any other advice?
Also, being a foreigner if I’m caught under the influence of illegal drugs or in the possession of small quantities am I likely to be treated harshly for being an outsider?
Will the police expect bribes?
I'm going in June. Staying in the Bulldog hotel. Good reviews and it generally looks great...

No they will not, do not even think of this when your under arrest for whatever you've done. Usually if you stay calm and if you cooperate you'lle be left off with a warning, wich depends on your luck.
You should stay at the bulldog its well worth it and right in the heart of the red light district.

I didn't mean to say to offer a bribe. I meant will they be like in some eastern European countries and Russia and hassle you just for a bribe?
I intend to stay reasonably on the right side of the law but wondered on the stance when it comes to more illegal drugs.

museum of torture is pretty awesome on shrooms though (got a cool ride at the end too), stay away from the gogh museum, I know it sounds cool to shroom at. but fuck those french people smell to high heaven and kill a trip entirely.

anne frank museum was awesome, even sober. of course you can't expect everyone to want to take something other than a huge loss of money and memory away from traveling, even if it is amsterdam. good luck though, and stay away from touristy shops (look for willie nelson strain and pot of gold - good shit, weed there basically sucks ass though, mostly all sativa.. and I don't like sativa. then again.. all preference I suppose), hemp museum gives you free hits of weed out of a volcano bag though, might wanna take that into account.

No cops in Amsterdam are fine. If you stay out there way, then all will be good.
Anyway i haven't read much of this thread but where do you plan to stay? If you want to save a bit of money, go to www.campingzeeburg.nl. It has a bar there where you can smoke your weed and have drinks and food at very reasonable prices, besides its coming up to the summer, so it would be the perfect time to go there.
Well I had narrowed it down to a few places.....however now I am concidering the camping. Seeing as it is so damn cheap. Did I read it right? 80euros for a 4 man cabin? Was that per person or what?
Anyway, the places I have narrowed it down to:
Hotel De Gerstekorrel
The Reason I am so keen on this one is due to its excellent location. Its right on dam square, just where I want to be. I would like the cabin, but staying in dam square will be unbelievable. Pretty cheap I spose though, only 2 star hotel. But for the amount of time we are going to be staying in the room it doesn't really matter.

Looks alright, looks nice and cheap. But....not fit for this occasion.

I've been twice for a weekend. with my parents so i couldn't get high or anything. shit at 11 i didnt even wanna get high... much. anyway the torture museum is fucking dogs bollocks i loved it since ya know i like guts and stuff. i think i stayed at a travelodge. the room was big and it was in a smoke free room ( parents are non-smokers) of course we could still smell the weed lol
also if i remember police arent allowed to stop and search you, or maybe its changed now so i would check it out cos its illegal to carry weed as well in amsterdam.

You'd have to be doing something really suspicious if you get searched by Dutch cops. And it's not illegal to carry weed in Amsterdam if it's less than 8 grams or something. And it's not like they care if you have some weed anyway.

No...it's not. It is not illegal to carry weed in Amsterdam, unless it is over a certain quantity. Cafes will only sell you 4-5grams at a time. It's pretty damn impossible to be arrested for the possession of weed then. Seeing as there are so many cafes, and there will be a few of us, there will be no point where one of us needs to carry that much. When we want a smoke....go inside somewhere that looks nice. When we go to the hotel....can smoke/buy from there anyway...but if we want a smoke in the room then if we each carry 5grams a piece then thats 20g. So yeah.....no need to worry about the police. Unless carrying class A's of course....

I think the cops would laugh at you because you're a tourist but trying to bribe them would actually get you in more trouble then any minor stuff you can come up with. I advice not to try it.
And if you get caught with harddrugs they'll probably just take 'em off you. Drugusers are treated very mildly here, they just target sellers.
Oh and btw caarying weed isn't illegal, only when it's over 5 grams, that's why you can't buy ore than 5 grams at a shop. If you want to stack up big you'll have to visit multiple shops or maybe go to a really dodgy one.
(the shops in my area very decent ones, in amsterdam half of them are ratholes)
honestly , with police you wont see many out there and thats the problem ! , when i went out last year in December you have Homeless people hassling you for money , food , even crack . I nearly got stabbed because this bum wanted my chinese . Make sure your in a group and not on your own at night .
