View Full Version : 16 year old girl alone in Paris: good/bad idea?

After GCSEs, it's a custom at my school to go to Newquay for a week of drinkinh, sex and clubs. Funnily enough, this doesn't appeal to me aand I'd much rather go to France for a couple of days and take in some museums & galleries.
So, if I were to go alone to Paris for two or three days, how wrong is it likely to go?
I speak french to gcse level and have been to paris a tonne of times so understand sort of how it works? the metro and all that, got an idea of what to & what not to do.
I can find my way around pretty much anywhere and seeing as I've trekked around the place a couple of times, it shouldn't be too hard to find my bearings.
Thing is, I only know one person in France, and he may have moved back to England by the time I go there, in which case I'll know no one. My Dad would probably advise me with YHA and crap anyway.
I also plan to go up to Glasgow and to London just for a day to just go there. I've never been to either before and eh, seems like a good time to go.
Would I be better off roping another friend in to coming with me to France? I think I'd rather go alone, or more I know that no one will come with me. Or London or Glasgow in fact?
Bleh. My Mum may freak out about the whole idea and I'll end up going to soggy Ireland and spending most of the 6 weeks there=/

You could go to Paris and have a wonderful, trouble free time. Who knows? You could go back to soggy Ireland and end up getting robbed by some scanger. I say go to Paris. In a place like that, you can always find yourself some good company if you need it.
I like your idea. Taking in some culture beats drunken partying and clubs any day of the week. If your parents give you any hassle over it, just tell them what your classmates generally do. They'll probably be more than happy to let you go after that. http://www.totse.com/bbs/smile.gif (http://www.totse.com/bbs/smile.gif)

Probably the same amount of shit could go wrong in Newquay as in Paris. If you stay in hostels while in Paris u'll meet tonnes of people albeit mostly annoying rich kids. If you want any advice on Glasgow let me know.
Yea I mean you could run into trouble, but when can you not http://www.totse.com/bbs/wink.gif (http://www.totse.com/bbs/wink.gif).
Just let go.
Youll run into way more trouble in Glasgow. That place is a fuckin shithole. Although its probably worse for men cuz they just like to beat the shit outta people.

Oui. My friend would prolly come with, he's from there & goes a stupid tonne so knows his way around.
Thanks for the input. My friends are under the impression that everywhere is like the Banlieue, let's hope my parents aren't so dippy.

If you go to Glasgow, and are asked what football team you support, there is only one acceptable answer (one that won't get you in trouble if you say it in the wrong place): Partick Thistle.
Remember this.
Parisian males are gonna mack on you...touch you in bars... flirt with you incessantly. Make eye contact and be loud about refusing them. Gotta have some spine.

Go to exeter, Its the only city iv ever been to where you dont get asked for id in clubs.. Seriously there were 14 year old girls in the clubs and the people at the bars knew how old they were.
Or go to france where you only have to be 16, you do have to consider that it will be very busy in the summer and personally I think Paris is a shithole and a pile of wank.

You'd probably be fine, I did similar trips when I was 17 to various countries in Europe. But I never went alone. I would advise bringing someone along, it's just safer...in case something happens.

Yeah I know.. I was also trying to point out that paris is a busy polluted shit hole with ques for everything includidng the fucking toilet. And in the summer it gets worse.
Im sure there are nicer smaller towns or citys with a more interested and possible obscure history.
why didn't anyone post the "you gonna get raped" pic yet?
youre going to get raped, by an old french creep.
have fun.

And i see nothing wrong with Paris. But I think Southern France would be better.
And damn it, party instead!

I'm pretty sure they just cleaned up the entire city a year or two ago to try and get the Olympic 2010 or 2012 bid. It can't be a shithole like you say already.
i thought you were a dude, and going to go to Paris to a 16 year old girl that is alone, and then s3x0rs her.

So long as you have someplace not-so-sleazy to stay, I'd go with Paris. Gotta be way more interesting than wherever the fuck Newquay is.

Seeing as you're looking for sex, you won't have to worry about getting raped.
Just bring a taser or something incase anyone tries to mug you and it'll be clear sailing.

Isobutane, you don't risk much going to Paris alone! How do you think 16 years old girl routinely go to high scholl, not even mentionning the crazy parties they attend !
i lived all together over 10 years in Paris, you only risk to have the craziest fun of your life...
If Dad and Mom are too worried, just tell them that cellulars works there too, it could be a good idea to short message the number of the guy/girl you'll eventually go out with to a good friend in England! Another good trick is to have a whistle, the loud type, DO NOT CARRY AROUND ANY KIND OF WEAPONS, if in real trouble just blow the whistle and start yelling "Au Feu" meaning there's a Fire, people tend to react more than if you'd yell help help ! The other trick is if anyguy starts to try to pick you up a litlle bit to heavily, never stop smiling, always talk to him, problems arise when you don't talk, it is very possible to turn down a sex driven male with a smile. The "banlieue" guys get bad if they're ignored, out of frustration, after all they're very sentimental type of guys, they're just tired of being invisible...
When will you be in Paris anyway?
cheers, B.

In all seriousness I think you will be ok in Paris, just stick to the main highway and don’t take any side streets. I think Italy would be out of the question for a young lass and chances are the locals would flash you.
As for Galleries in Paris try the Louvre and don’t forget the Pompidou. I recall drinking wine with a bunch of people at a hostel near La Republic. Jim Morrison is also at the wonderful graveyard in Paris as well.
Here in L.A. we have the Beverly Center Mall, which looks a lot like the Pompidou on the outside and it’s not too far from Bel-Air.

And speaking of which, did you ever post pics for the calendar?

My french teacher told me to yell Au Feu too! She went there alone 16-18, and again for a few years after her degree.
I've been a few times, and my Dad always dragged me around places like the Louvre, musée d'orsee and um, the big palace places=] I just want a good luck myself now that I'm older, and to really boost my art knowledge. And i just want to go there.
Duh, I would post pictures. No, I haven't posted for the calendar.
So you can go to bars at 16 there? I never intended on doing that, but I might once if I can. Just for the experience, yanno.
It's sort of doubtful I'll be allowed this year. I mentioned it to my Dad and he was like BLEH and went on about my aunt having a super shitty time when she was an au pair in Paris... I'm also considering being an au pair over a summer or a couple months or w/e.

That's why going out in Exeter is so shit. You can go to Arena and be swarmed by 16 year old kids, or go to Warehouse and have bottles thrown at you.
Personally, I would much rather be in Paris than in Exeter...

id take a friend or friends with me but that's just me, added security and perhaps fun also.
I went and am going again to Switzerland to see my friend who moved out there, first visit was at 16 alone, its amazing, so yeah i dont think (if you have to go alone) that should hold you back.

Isobutane what do you think is more dangerous drinking and having unproteded sex with people you don't know, who are drug and high on god knows what. Or going to a few art galleries. I think you should go to France. This is just the opinion of some asshole.

Despite what you plan on doing, it's not a good idea for a young girl to go travelling alone. Paris is a nice city, but the tourist part of the city isn't all there is to it.
That's really all there is to say.

One of my friends from home was nearly raped in Paris last year, and I've heard quite a few bad things about girls travelling alone there. Mind that Paris is a big city and not all of it it's the postcard landscape, some places can be quite rough.

I have never been to London, I've never been on holiday in england except centre parks in Nottingham. I actually live in England, and I am not blonde. I am visibly very irish(apparently they can tell all this in glasgow, so I should be okay with the celtic fansn?)- though sometimes mistaken for looking french? I don't know why, i'm not tan or qwhatever.
My best friend is glaswegian and he is all "kk do this say this go hereblahlah" so I think I will manage there.
I will for sure be going to London & Glasgow but paris is looking, hmm, kind of doubtful. kind of not doubtful. 50:50

Is that right? So if I were to go in there, say I was Maitreya (the next Messiah), and start preaching my philosophy, would they want to kick my ass?
I typically hear about people getting shot down in France or Paris. I don't know what that's all about, though. I'd want to be careful walking around town if I don't know the current politics and crime scene.
I'd have to kill the bitch that pulls a gun on me. However, I rather not start world war 3. I rather enjoy a nice walk in the park instead of kicking everyone's ass.

My mates uncle just got back from a trip with his wife there.
They were walking along a river side in/around Paris in the mid-evening, about 8, still in a built up sort of area when two skinny looking black blokes, one with a knife tried to mug them.
Most likely Somalian refugees.
Lucky for him, hes been training various martial arts for about 15 years, hes pretty sure he broke ones leg and the other ones jaw.
Apparently these refugees are becoming a problem over there..

glasgow, stay away from the barrons, and if your by yourself its adviseable to stay in on nights as chances are you will pick up a stalker or druggy
edinbrugh, ok for nights out but as for being alone its the same as glasgow
inverness, no really any trouble but there is fuck all to do
aberdeen, isnt too bad during the week but weekends can be dodgy
if its just planning for one day find out what you want to discover

I used to live in France, and i\'ve been there more than any other country appart from the UK. I can safely say lots of French people fucking suck, loads are awesome however. They also go out of their way to refuse to speak any langauge appart from French, so make sure you brush up on the language skills.
Seriously, Germany, Holland, Denmark, Spain, Portugal - they all want to show off their English Skills. France it\'s - \"zut alors, anglais emerdé, etudie notre langue!\"
And most of France hates the Parisians. Now that\'s saying something...
Still go there though, you\'ll probably have a wonderful time.
