Like a lot of people who travel, I really enjoy seeing beautiful buildings that are vastly different from what I see at home. One such building that I'm looking forward to visiting on my upcoming trip is the Sulten Ahmed Mosque in Istanbul. Judging by pictures alone, this building is going to be amazing.

Feel free to post pictures of other buildings you like!

PS: Anyone been to this mosque?

oh, I know, that mosque is fantastic. actually, the first thing that came to mind when I read your post and saw the pictures was the great cathedral of Sevilla, where I was at the beginning of this summer.

can't find the pictures at the moment, though. but it's really worth looking up, one of the most impressive architectural achievements I have ever seen. columns so thick that a dozen people would have trouble getting around the whole circumference.

You're right Argus, that's an impressive building.

thanks for looking it up and posting pics! that brings back some very nice memories. my own pictures look very similar, in fact.

you have to wait in line for about an hour though before they let you in, even when it's not the main season... it's a huge tourist attraction. but easily worth it.

But really, I don't know very much beautiful architecture, I like it - but it hasn't been my main interest.

I just went through all my europe-trip folder and found the top architechture pics, a proccess that took about 30 minutes... and when i clicked upload the site said to try again later. http://www.totse.com/bbs/frown.gif (http://www.totse.com/bbs/frown.gif)

I'll post sometime else... great thread though. Architecture is definitely one of the most amazing differences and experiences when I'm traveling abroad.

Thanks for the effort Kazz. That happens to me too sometimes.

Another building I enjoyed is St. Mary's cathedral in Killarney, Ireland. It's not on the same scale as the previous buildings, but it's visually pleasing and fits in really well with it's environment. There aren't many pics of it on the net apparently, so here's one I took and the rest I didn't.

And probably my favorite building (that i've actually seen) is Kylemore Abbey in Ireland. I really enjoyed staring at it and ended up sleeping in the woods near it for a couple nights. Nobody came near where I was, so it was a nice little break from social interaction. http://www.totse.com/bbs/smile.gif (http://www.totse.com/bbs/smile.gif)

That's my last trip overseas. Sort of laid out in chronological order for ya... haha.

Right now I can't think of any other amazing architecture i've come in contact with (pics are on other computer). I remember a lot of places in Ireland, but I was very young and couldn't really appreciate them. I will say the Empire State Building steals my heart as well.

^Also, I actually cannot stand the Gaudi/Barcelona architecture. It's so unpleasing to my eyes... yet for the sake of the thread I posted that picture anyways.

great stuff, Kazz. really, you don't like the Sagrada Familia? were you inside? I remember walking up the tower, it was great.

I'm not a fan of Gaudi's, but I think the Sagrada is great. very unusual.

seems like you spent a lot of time in Italy. that's nice!

You have some really nice shots there Kazz! I'm really looking forward to seeing some more of Europe. A lot of the places I've been just don't have the same architectural scale. To keep the thread going, here's a couple anyway.

http://tinyurl.com/y8nh4j - typical Guatemalan waterfront

http://tinyurl.com/y29w8k - picture I snapped from a leaky old boat coming into Dangriga, Belize.

http://tinyurl.com/yyyy4x - the city center of where I'm living now. it's a smaller city, but I find the skyline pleasing. our claim to fame is the sunsphere, also known as that big glass ball on a stick. not bad for an office building.

Eh... I will say that that the Sagrada Familia is fascinating, and it does overwhelm you with a sense of monumental power... but as much emotion as it brought to me I still can't say I like the way it looks. I do appreciate it though.

Also Captain, I have just the opposite going on in my travel life. Too many of my trips have been strictly in the Western World, and I'm really ready to experience more developing nations instead. My cuba trip coming up will be an interesting blend of both worlds, and will be intruiging in itself, and then in a few years after I receive an undergraduate degree in English I hope to do some putzing around Africa, hopefully working or teaching english or something.

You've lived an amazing life man. You should be very fortunate. If I didn't have so many strings attaching my foot to the ground, I would strive to be like you. http://www.totse.com/bbs/wink.gif (http://www.totse.com/bbs/wink.gif)

Edit: Also, I've driven through Knoxville before. I remember seeing that thing and actually saying to myself that it's the tackiest building in America... haha. No offense though. :P

Thanks for the kind words, and no worries about our glass ball. Part of the TN charm is our tackyness. What's funny is that they built it for the World's Fair back in 1982, and that was our vision of what the future would look like!

I have to agree, it's great stuff. not 100% my kind of architecture, but I like it very much nonetheless. the second pic doesn't work for me, btw.
