View Full Version : I think my parents moving into the city was a mistake

By that I mean the city.

I was never really the type of guy who liked populated areas, big malls or any of that.

I've spent a week in a small town where my parents grew up in and it was heaven, I would walk around enjoying the long fields of grass, enjoy some coffee at a small coffee shop, everyone would talk to you and get to know you if they don't recognize your from around here.

And when I came back here to the city I really hated it, crowded streets,un-friendly people, killings and shootings everyday.

I'm considering moving away when I turn 20 or so but I'd hate to leave here since all of my friends/family are here.

What do you guys think? City life or Small town life

My father asked himself the very same question when we were younger. Should he take us to http://tinyurl.com/ybmmbd and make less money or take us to http://tinyurl.com/shgwj and make more money.

He chose the country, and I'm very glad for it. I've seen a couple cities that I could live in for a time, but I could never settle in one forever. There's just something about the huge crowds, nasty smells, and concrete that turns me off. Growing up in the mountains, even the people I didn't know and didn't talk to.. I still knew everything about them.

My only complaint about the place I'm from would be the bigotry and racism. The KKK is still around somewhat and several years ago when a black family moved to the mountain, someone set their house on fire with a burning cross in the front yard. http://www.totse.com/bbs/frown.gif (http://www.totse.com/bbs/frown.gif)

Oh man KKK thats disgusting. But I love going to my dads house in Pemberton. Its a tiny little town thats full of rich people. Its like 20 minutes away from whistler so you can imagine its surrounded by massive mountains and it gets alot of snow in the winter and you can just relax but when you're looking for a good place to party at night, whistler has the best night life ive seen anywhere.

City for me. My parents moved from the City(London) to the country(Capital of a place call the Fens aka inbred Central) and I hate it. I grew up somewhat in london and I will always be a Londoner but I live near Cambridge at the moment because its so expensive in London.

I hear you man, I hate the city. I'm basicly in the same situation as you are.

This is where I live now. http://tinyurl.com/ylerqn

This is where I want to move one day, http://tinyurl.com/yn76zp

And it's only a 2-3 hours drive away so I can come back anytime. I'm not worried about how much money I'll make, a decent living is enough.

I live in the city, have my whole life, whenever I head out East or down South, when it gets all mountainy (where I ride dirt bikes and camp out) it just feels so strange, but I love it. It's completely different then living in a big city.

I've lived out in the sticks my whole damn life and it sucks... all those city people who only care about money move out here to retire and are total bastards, to many churchgoers by far, and once you have walked every inch of land in a 10 mile radius you realize there is nothing to do and this place sucks.

I really do perfer the city where you can talk to people about more than stock prices and how great "jesus" is...I swear I haven't had a decent conversation in years. Also, the internet service is generally crap.

Lucky! My town is turning more suburbian by the day, I hate it. I like the country just because of the space and the freedom, and the woods.

Ideal would be the rockies, snowboarding and space are a key combo. If I owned a little slope I could make a rope tow, have all my stuff powered by the wind, no neighbors to bitch about whatever I'm up to.... http://www.totse.com/bbs/smile.gif (http://www.totse.com/bbs/smile.gif)

My uncle has 60 acres in NH on lake winnepasaki[sp? spell check is coming up with "breadwinners"...hmmm], I love going up there. Also we have friends in Maine, some on Lake Sebago, and others on Muscungous[sp?] bay, that's awesome too. I love going out on the lake or the ocean in my kayak for as long as I want, just relaxing and taking in the sights[Herons, turtles, fish, weird trees, lobsta[when I raid the traps http://www.totse.com/bbs/biggrin.gif (http://www.totse.com/bbs/biggrin.gif)], and whatever is there. Actually last time I was up on the ocean I found that marine life can be quite tropical there. After searching for crabs on a little shallow rocky straight that the tide is always rushing over[and bloody feet from barnacles [ http://www.totse.com/bbs/mad.gif (http://www.totse.com/bbs/mad.gif)] I flipped a rock to find sea anenomies[sp?spellcheck sucks http://www.totse.com/bbs/mad.gif (http://www.totse.com/bbs/mad.gif)], a few types of sponge, and some other pink growing stuff, along with some red and green crabs. Looked like it was straight out of a coral reef, surprised the hell out of me. I also got to ride my bike up along the road[the signs of which were almost scrap mettle because of the bullet holes] and caught a boat out to the island where I went to camp from when I was 10-13. Audubon camps are awesome. Ok this is turning into a TGO post, I'm gonna stop. But Maine is my favorite place I've been so far.

Money = Opportunity

Success = Not living in the fucking gutter

Therefore,

Money = Success

Money isn't everything, but you're a fool if you think you could do with out it.

Well I mean unless you move out to the middle of nowhere where governments can't tax you for living on their land.

Money drives this car. Not pussy.

i would love a small rustic town, if i can get good broadband.

i prefer small towns, remote areas..its just so much more peaceful and less hetic..and you can go out side and enjoy the beatiful scenery, just so much better.

btw, you can be extremely successfull without generating a HUGE income, small towns = not quite as pricey as a city, thus you dont need as much to live off of.

it wouldnt matter either way, i love living in small towns. wouldnt trade it for anything. my idea house is a nice rustic loft cabin type house off the hillside of a mountain peeking down at a feild or somthing.

I get fucking bored in these small ass areas. The longer you spend in one the more time you have to figure out that there aint shit to do! If you could go to like a club or a hookah bar or a show or anyfuckingthing then i might be able to enjoy myself. Everytime I go home and hang out with friends from high school no one can ever think of shit to do unless theres a party or something. When going to the mall is one of the best forms of entertainment in a town I want the fuck out of there.

I live in the city outskirts. I can walk ten minutes south and I'll get to the city central, or I can walk ten minutes north and it's forest and mountains for hundreds of miles.

I live on the outskirts of the city. It's usually the area where people live so they can escape city life when they go home from work. But mostly, here it's just sprawling council estates that they couldn't fit into the city.

I like the anonimity of city life; how no one cares about you and you can walk the same central street everyday of your life and the same people you see everyday will never talk to you. About eight of us get on the bus at the terminus everyday, at the same time, have our own seats, our own order for getting on the bus. We all know each other's bus habits and abide to the unwritten laws of the number 69, but we never talk. Ever.

I also like living on the edge. It's secluded and very isolated. No one knows my area exists unless they live in it, or happen to see its name on the one bus which goes here.

I think I will always live in cities. Hopefully I'll live closer to the centre when I'm older. In the country, people will recognise you; in the city, no ones gives a fuck and you can be surrounded by 2 million people, but no one knows a damned thing about you except your last name from when they accidentally got your mail.

I don't like cliquey friendliness, but I do like smiling at people I will never see again. And the vast amount of "weirdos" who I'm more than happy to talk to.

I really love my city.

I get the best of both, lotta countryside, farms, lil towns all surrounding the big city where i live, so whenever i get pist at the traffic and noise and people, i take a 5 min drive and goto the country, its a nice change of pace.

I've lived in all three types of areas (rural, urban, suburbs), and I can safely say that I've been the happiest in the South, living just outside of the suburbs. There are plenty of people to chill with just a mile or two away, and you're close enough to the city to go out every weekend, and in most cases you can own a few acres to have enough privacy, and some woods to wander around in.

I never got bored, really. If I had stayed long enough to make more friends, I'm sure I would have loved it even more.

I like small town life, but only if I have at least some sort of access to civilisation, like a 15 minute train ride or something. Now I live in the city with my parents, and it sucks ass.

CITY! Nothin to do even like 30 minutes away. I wouldn't have it any other way.

When I move away it won't be anywhere less than 100,000 in population.

I dunno..it really depends on where you grow up i guess. I lived in the city all my life with my friend, and we could do a lot of shit. We could ride bikes to the arcade, bookstore, ect.

then when he moved and i went up to see him, it was like "wtf" there was nothing really to do, other then stuff like do walk in the woods. That cool until you pissed on the same log ten times. However, it was relaxing, and you could do things that you can't do in the city. So..it really is a 50/50.

i spent the first 10 years of my life in north texas (Borger, Near Amarillo), i used to be able to enjoy all the things you wish you could do in a city, take a walk into the canyon(right behind my house),having a lake near our house (fishing), just enjoy a scenic view without civilization

my dad made about 60,000 a year back then, the thing was, everything there was cheap, after we moved to houston, my dad doubled his pay

i remember my house, it was a red house that you i remember driving with my dad down to main street in my dads old Ford Futura to get a 2 dollar hair cut i remember my elementary school, the thing i love about the school system in small towns which im realizing just now is that they tend to teach manners and respect, courtesy and all the other neccessary behavior needed to function in life, you dont see that in big cities( i realized that when i moved to Houston later in life where i was made fun of because of being nice to teachers, girls and to elders)

now im just rambling, but in my honest opinion the country is a great place to grow up in, but eventually your gonna need to be in the city for more exposure to society.

i missed my small town too but the thing is, my parents moved to the city at the right time, that so far ive experienced both almost equally but yeah im gonna move back there in my future, maybe ill buy a ranch near my old house when i retire.

^^^I concur, small towns are more wholesome, I grew up in a small town in south texas about 45 mintues from corpus christi bay, and 3 hours from houston...i've spent time in houston but I never did like it...I'm now in montana and I love it, I plan on retiring up here after about 20 years in my career
