One of the better scanning mags is listening times (I think that's what it's called). It is avaiable at most larger bookstores. There are plenty of books around, but the internet is a better place to look. If you want to listen in on police, cordless phones and CB, I would reccomend the radio shack pro-95 (about $150) on ebay. The reason why you are going to need a more expensive scanner like this one is that the police where you live most likely have trunked radios. Trunking is basically when the transmit/recieve freqeuncy switches every few seconds. a trunking scanner knows when the frequency is going to change, and automatically does it. If you know that the cops in your town aren't trunked, then you can get a general coverage reciever, which is either slightly cheaper, or many times more expensive, depending on model. A good cheap one is the IC-Q7, this has the same hardware as the IC-R5 but slightly different software which prevents it from receiving below 30 mhz, if you buy the programming cable, then you can open up the recieve to below 30 mhz, but on the down side, it won't follow trunked siggys.
