OK, so my headphones are currently hooked up to my computer speakres. NO MUSIC is playing on my computer, and yet I'm hearing radio-quality classical piping in through the headphones. I am -not- under the influence of any drugs right now. What gives? I've always had weird sounds come out of these headphones when connected to my computer. And just now I'm hearing a radio DJ talking. wtf? Thanks for any help.

I have the same problem.
Althogh the sound comes out the speaker.
It is also not affected by the volume knob.

chances are that there is a high power AM radio station nearby. If it is not music and just one side of a conversation, then you are hearing Ham or CB radio. If it is an am radio station, then when you turn on an AM radio, you should hear this same station almost all the way across the band.

That happens to me occasionally because of my next door neighbours, except it's not always music, it's either almost inaudible voices talking in Spanish or Tejano music. My neighbours use CB radios and they have a huge 30 foot anttena in their backyard. The noise is because signal leakage from the radio. The owner doesn't have anything to shield the signal so it'll leak every once in a while. So I can't do much about it except tell them to stop using it

If you can hear your neighbor, and he is using CB, that means that he is using an amp. Amps are VERY illegal in CB, if you want to risk it you could send him a letter claiming that you are the FCC, and if he doesn't stop, he will be prosecuted. Or if you don't want to risk a prison sentence, just report him to the FCC.

High powered radio transmitting devices will overload other electronic devices. Alot of the time it's the fault of the effected device being built with very little rejection.
The radio has to meet stringent requirements to to comply with the FCC licence class and regulations.
However TVs, computers and modern electronics are built as cheap as possible with very little thought to supression and rejection of unwanted Rx signals.
With the computer, if the "broadcast" is heard only when using the headphones and not through your speakers, then your headphone lead is acting as an antenna.
Each radio frequency has it's own wavelength thus the electrical length of an antenna is matched to it's wavelength for optimal reception.
So it's quite possible your headphone lead is a perfect miltiple in length for the frequency you are hearing.
Sometimes RF problems are hard to rectify however, try changing the length of your headphone lead. Your headphones may also have cheap speakers in the earpieces with very little shielding, so try another set.
If that doesn't work look at Ferrite supressors for the lead or ferrite chokes. They are very cheap from electrical outlets like Radio Shack.
Failing that, you could try moving the effected device to another location, or running it off a different mains outlet.

are you sure its CB? it could be ham radio. if it is, there are lots of things you can do about it. the FCC is heavy on regulations, and if it is causing interferance they are required to fix the problem. at least im pretty sure thats how it is. my dad is a ham radio operator, the highest class thingie. i took the test to get a license a few times and failed. i diddnt want to get my license though, my dad forced me to try. anyway, this might apply to CB also, not sure. but no matter what it is, there is probably something you can do about it. if there arent any legal methods, take a sledge hammer or an axe to his antenna one night. if it gets messed up enough, its worthless, and they are expensive to replace, so if you do that a couple times he will probably give up. or get a dog and train it to attack anything in his yard.

Most hams are very serious about who is responsible for fixing the interference, and as long as their signal is clean and their beam isn't concentrating too much power on you, then they don't have to do anything about it(but look it up for yourself. or ask here www.qrz.com). (http://www.qrz.com).) But if it is CB, then the users are operating over legal limit and they can be reported.

THISIS FUCKED! k on my phone that i use in my bedroom , sometimes late at nite if im talking i can hear a very quite classical type music , and ive heard those pipes your talkinga bout too!!
government conspiracy anyone?

government conspiracy my ass. It's a fucking AM radio station, try listening to your am radio and phone at the same time, and when you hear the same stuff coming out of both the phone and radio, then you know what's causing your problem. I've never heard a CBer intelligent enough to play classical music, and hams aren't allowed to play music.

Quick question.
I can hear police transmissions, though my quadrophonics. Is that illigal?

In the US, no.
Elswhere, I'm not sure. What you can't do is tell people what you've heard. I believe these laws came about after somebody blabbed about what he heard on his scanner, turns out that he blabbed about Newt Gingrich's cell phone convo. I've also heard several stories where a scanner was listening to a DEA freq. and the suspects got warned by the listener, and managed to escape the country. So, yes you can listen in the US, just keep your mouth shut.
happened to me on 3 occasions. can you do this ON PURPOSE!? Ive played with the volume.

actually I slipped a few dots of acid in your headphones. No but really its probably just interference, I get entire radio stations clearly on my stereo speakers without it being on, I get complete and clear cell phone conversations, radio messages from the airport, all kindsa shit...kinda freaky when you're wicked h1gh but cool too
You have real media player or windows media playing on another login to windows xp (at least thats what happens when mine plays music and shit)

I remember once when i drpped a few tabs of 'cid ans swore i heard government offical's talking about me through my radio. I started getting all freaked and shit, but then i remebered i was tripping and it didint matter.
Just a little reply to your post about music coming from your speakers. Someone mentioned that if you hear music, there's either a high powered AM/FM station nearby. I live fairly close to a few stations and I have that problem often. I also pick up stations on my amplifier (guitar amp and other amp for my turntable). It's not that odd. Just as you can hear music on your telephone sometimes, you can pick up radio programs and music on your computer speakers. It's commonly found near high powered stations. Look into the stations nearby. It's quite interesting how they intercept normal frequencies though.

go to www.phreak.com (http://www.phreak.com) they have all you want about radios, hacking, pyrotechnics, occult, drugs, and lots of other shit. my favorite site as far as archives go.

i think its called RFI which is radio frequency interference. when copper sheilding is damaged inside the cable, it lets the RFI in. it gets damaged by stepping on the cables and other wear and tear. once while an oboe player was playing a solo at an orchestra concert, a local country station came through the bass players amplifier. make sure if you are an instrument player, your cables are properly sheilded, especially if you gig at night because most AM stations boost the signal at night.
mindfuck

My computer speakers pick up conversations over those two way radios. You know the motorola 2 mile kind.

AM radio stations don't boost the signal at night. It's because the ionsphere is less excited by the sun it it reflects more AM radio waves.
Also, it's not illegal to listento police frequencies, although it is illegal to act on them. For example, say if you were listening to police frequencies and they say that a big truck full of money crashed and there's money everywhere 2 streets down from you, that wouldn't be illegal. Now if you went down to the accident with the intent to pick up the money, that would be illegal.

aside from building a faraday cage around your room, you're gonna have to just take the interference
not true, you might try replacing your audio cables with higher quality, better shielded (more expenseive) ones. should help some what. monster cable gold works great for me, and its a little cheaper then most of the other shielded cables i've found.
This happened to me before. I'm pretty sure its because of shitty unshielded wire. Anyways, when this happened I was hooking up a bunch of complicated audio gear and didn't know what I was doing, nearly bist some stuff. Something is probably severely wrong...
